Brush fires break out in Prospect Park amid historic NYC drought
PROSPECT PARK/CITYWIDE — AFTER FIREFIGHTERS CONTAINED TWO BRUSH FIRES AT PROSPECT PARK, Mayor Eric Adams has banned grilling, smoking and any open flames in city parks, according to announcements posted on his and the Prospect Park Alliance’s websites on Sunday, Nov. 10. The Prospect Park Alliance reported that a fire broke out in a woodland ravine near the Nethermead meadow, which is at the center of the park. Fire Department officials told the Daily News on Saturday that firefighters extinguished a second brush fire near the LeFrak Center on Saturday. As of Sunday, Nov. 10, the FDNY was still investigating what sparked the fire.
The Alliance posted a Fire/Red Flag Weather Alert on its website, and asked for donations of any size to help restore the area of the park that was burned. Red Flag warnings had been issued for NYC starting early on Friday, Nov. 8 because of an ongoing severe drought and high winds.
In addition to the Prospect Park blazes, two other brush fires broke out in the southeastern Brooklyn neighborhood of Marine Park, also due to drought conditions there, FDNY officials told News12 Brooklyn. Those fires were reportedly under control by Sunday night.
