BOROUGH PARK — THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF EPILEPSY CENTERS named Maimonides Medical Center a level three epilepsy center in recognition of the quality of professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest-level medical evaluation and treatment for patients with this complex neurological disorder.
Maimonides is one of three level three adult epilepsy centers in Brooklyn, offering the most in-depth epilepsy care in the borough. Maimonides epileptologists partner with other epilepsy specialists at SUNY Downstate and Kings County Hospital Center. Level three care is comprehensive to handle more complex conditions such as refractory epilepsy, which is resistance to pharmaceutical treatments. The health system joins nine other health centers in New York City named level three or level four epilepsy centers. Clinicians at Maimonides’ Epilepsy Center collaborate across specialties to provide a full range of diagnostic, medical and neuropsychological services to patients with various types of epilepsy.
Epilepsy, which can have various underlying causes, is a neurological disorder that causes seizures or abnormal electrical activity within the brain.
