BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — ROXY, A BELOVED15-year-old eclectus parrot from Brooklyn Heights, was recently rescued by the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center following intensive specialized treatment.
Roxy was adopted as a baby chick by Brooklyn Heights residents Amanda and Peter Nissman and delighted them with her sweet personality. She enjoys singing in the shower, watching her mother dance and sitting on Peter’s shoulder and singing while he plays guitar. Roxy likes chatting to strangers and often says “hello” or “peek-a-boo.”
After Roxy was diagnosed with a chronic egg-laying condition last year, her parents brought her to the AMC for a second opinion. Previous vet visits had identified two masses on either side of her neck and a possibility of infection. Advanced diagnostic tests, including ultrasounds, a CT scan and DNA sequencing, identified the masses as chronic infections within an immune cell cluster. Dr. Daniel Spector successfully removed the larger mass on the left side of the neck, and the smaller mass on the right was treated with daily medication.
Roxy was able to discontinue her medication in mid-2025, and today, she is thriving in great health. She will be honored at the AMC’s 18th Annual Living Legends Luncheon on May 13, along with other remarkable recovery cases.
AMC is the world’s largest nonprofit animal hospital, and was originally founded as a women-led branch of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
