PETERSBURG — Rehabilitated and returned to the wild: Vladimir Romanov, the founder of the bird hospital ‘Green Parrot’, releases a hawk that has been restored to health at his hospital, marking Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in Russia.
Romanov founded the hospital in 1992, but its mission of healing quickly expanded from exotic birds to other wild animals.
They identify their work as “Wild Animal Medicine,” and the doctors have presented at symposia and other conferences. Romanov has also published books on the treatment of ornithological diseases.
EQUATORIAL GUINEA — The day to wear your best cassock: Pope Leo XIV, flanked by Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, right, is welcomed by Archbishop Juan Nsue Edjang Mayé, left, and Juan Domingo-Beka Esono Ayang upon his arrival at Malabo International Airport, Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
One of the pontiff’s stops in Equatorial Guinea was at a technological and vocational school named after his predecessor, Pope Francis, visiting the day after the first anniversary of Francis’s death.
Equatorial Guinea was once a Spanish colony and gained independence on Oct. 12, 1968.
MANHATTAN — The famous troupe known for high kicks: Dancers rehearse before an audition for the Radio City Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall in New York, on Wednesday.
The Rockettes were founded 101 years ago and have become the longest-lasting precision dance company in the United States.
In the April 22 auditions, the dancers are vying not only for a desirable spot in the ensemble that produces the annual Christmas Spectacular, but also a spot in the company’s no-fee dancer development programs.
LIMA — Dress shirts, ties and official vests — these are officially appointed canvassers … don’t mess with them: Special Electoral Jury appointees recount votes for the 2026 general election, in Peru, Wednesday.
The election has remained bitterly contested, with no winners named more than a week after it was held, on April 12.
Peru’s election chief resigned on April 21 due to what are being called logistical problems.
BELGIUM — The tense smile of a winner: Demi Vollering of the Netherlands catches her breath after crossing the finish line to win the women’s Belgian cycling classic Flèche Wallonne (Walloon Arrow), in Huy, Wednesday.
This marks her second victory in La Flèche Wallonne Femmes.
First run in 1998, it is the women’s counterpart to the men’s La Flèche Wallonne.
BUCHAREST — Stolen goods back on display: Journalists take photos of the Dacian gold items, a 2,500-year-old helmet and wristbands, at the National Museum of Romanian History, in Romania, Tuesday.
The set, which dates back to this ancient civilization, was stolen from a museum in the Netherlands in a January 2025 raid that shocked the international art world. Dutch authorities recovered the treasures.
The three suspected thieves are on trial in a case attracting international scrutiny.
DENVER — Nice place to swing if you can get there: Minnesota Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo (0) dunks against the Denver Nuggets during the second half in Game 2 of a first-round NBA playoffs basketball series Monday, April 20, 2026.
The Timberwolves won 119-114, tying the series 1-1.
The two teams meet again for Game 3 on Thursday, April 23, at Target Center in Minneapolis.
PETERSBURG — The expressions seem to say, ‘Exactly which victory are we talking about?’ Navy cadets march during a rehearsal for the Victory Day military parade at the Dvortsovaya (Palace) Square, in Russia, Tuesday.
Victory Day is observed each year on May 9 to mark Russia’s defeat of the Nazis. A surrender document was signed in Western Europe on the night of May 8, but due to time zone differences, it was already May 9 in Russia.
Victory Day was not immediately established as an annual holiday, and in 1947, it was made a working day under Joseph Stalin. Some historians say the holiday was initially downplayed in the postwar period amid concerns about the independent prestige of Red Army commanders.
In 1965, Leonid Brezhnev restored Victory Day as a major public holiday, expanding official commemorations of the Soviet Union’s World War II victory.
