FORT GREENE — THE LANDMARKS PRESERVATION COMMISSION HAS APPROVED A 24-STORY RENTAL TOWER above the historic Hanson Place Central United Methodist Church, reports 6sqft.
Developer Stretke and architects FXCollaborative and ADP Architects secured the approval, which LPC granted on Tuesday after revising the original proposal for the site at 144 St. Felix St. The project will restore the façade of the church, which is landmarked but closed, and will build a 24-story tower on top of it.
The original plan raised concerns over the proposed building’s height and massing, which Community Board 2’s Land Use Committee nixed at its November 2025 meeting because they deemed it “inappropriate” for the location and for the wider Brooklyn Academy of Music Historic District. The developer and architect then revised their plan, reducing the building from 27 to 24 stories and the height by some 30 feet.
Stretke in January was granted a $25.3 loan from Integritas to develop the site of the church, originally constructed around 1931 to replace an earlier sanctuary building that was damaged by subway construction. The 1931 building was closed down in 2019 and its congregation, originally founded in 1857, merged with Grace United Methodist Church in Park Slope.
