BOROUGH PARK — MAIMONIDES HEALTH HAS RECEIVED $40,000 from the American Board of Internal Medicine through the “Building Trust: Advancing Health Equity” grant program.
The grant will support a community-engaged leadership training program for clinicians and community members across Brooklyn safety-net hospitals, to lead efforts to address health inequities and improve local health outcomes. This program builds on an existing Building Trust: Advancing Health Equity grant.
Originally launched within a single Central Brooklyn health system, the program will now expand to several anchor institutions in Brooklyn — Maimonides Health, One Brooklyn Health, NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. One Brooklyn Health is the umbrella organization for three hospitals in Central Brooklyn: Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, Interfaith Medical Center and Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, all of which will participate, an OBH spokesperson told the Eagle on Monday.
The program’s expansion will broaden its reach and strengthen long-term sustainability at a critical time for underserved communities. The project is intended to advance health equity and healthcare quality by expanding a proven leadership training model, with 60 competitively-chosen fellows, across Brooklyn’s healthcare safety net, according to Maimonides.
Sophia Kostelanetz, MD, MPH, Associate Medical Director of Maimonides’ Department of Medicine, will lead the 12-month interdisciplinary training program.

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park. I continue to be amazed at the serene hideaways that the city offers in some of the busiest places — and, still, with an iconic view.”

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — ‘A miracle that no one was killed …’ That’s what neighbors are saying about the collapse of the Hotel St. George marquee. Shown in this photograph are workmen beginning the removal and repair of the historic, old neon sign at the corner, referencing a relic of Brooklyn Heights’ past: the St. George Hotel.

ATLANTIC AVENUE — Exhausted shopper with cluster of bags and goods from mall at Boerum Place stops to look at huge construction site across the street. “Is that REALLY going to be a jail??” Her male companion is reassuring, “Nothing like Rikers … this is 21st Century.”
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Overheard in line at one of most popular pastry outlets on Montague Street: “Hope I can get them into a camp …” A mother with two pre-schoolers in tow was showing a friend the Dodge Y flyer for Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 18.
