BED-STUY — NICHOLAS BROOKLYN, a neighborhood health and wellness institution in Bed-Stuy that has operated for 52 years at 1396 Fulton St., is fighting to keep its doors open, according to News12.
Owner Monique Nicholas, who inherited the shop from her father, who began his career selling products from the trunk of his car in 1974, says surging operating costs, rising rents, competition and the migration of customers to online retailers make survival increasingly difficult.
The store carries organic health and beauty products and hosts events and a wellness expo. A GoFundMe was created on Feb. 8 and has so far drawn more than $17,000 in community donations.
“Because of inflation, tariffs and rising rents, it’s been very overwhelming for us here at Nicholas,” Nicholas told News12. “I have competition nearby that has also been making it very difficult for us. Operating costs are at an all-time high. So as a single mother and small business owner, it’s been very stressful trying to make ends meet.”
