SUNSET PARK — JOHARY CANTAVE, 14, was shot in the head and killed late Friday while seated in a Mitsubishi at 46th Street and Ninth Avenue, approximately seven blocks from his home, according to the New York Post.
Gunfire erupted around 11:50 p.m. as three unknown men fought with someone outside the vehicle, shattering the rear window. A friend drove Cantave to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police believe suspects fled the scene on mopeds following the conflict.
Cantave was three months from middle school graduation. He is survived by his mother, who called for life sentences for those responsible.
“They have to go to prison for life,” Cantave’s mother said to the Post. “I don’t want them out. They see no day, no light. Nothing.”
