STATEWIDE — STATE LAWMAKERS convened a public hearing in Albany on March 4 to weigh revisions to New York’s white-collar crime statutes. The measure under consideration, titled the Securing Customer Assets against Malfeasance Act — also known as the SCAM Act — would establish a new penalty framework targeting misconduct by large corporations, Spectrum News 1 reports.
Brooklyn State Sen. Zellnor Myrie, who sponsored the legislation and chairs the Senate Codes Committee, told Spectrium News 1, “Our fraud statute has not caught up to all of the technology that has advanced over the past 40 years.”
“The truth is, New Yorkers are getting scammed on a daily basis by a lot of these new technologies.”
Myrie represents districts spanning Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Prospect Lefferts Gardens and Windsor Terrace.
No vote has been scheduled; the bill remains in Myrie’s committee.
