FORT GREENE — NURSES AT THE BROOKLYN HOSPITAL CENTER said Thursday the hospital system has refused to pay nurses’ benefits since October, resulting in their health care benefits being cut off Jan. 31.
According to a statement by the New York State Nurses Association, the union representing the nurses, management has refused to pay nurses’ healthcare and pension benefits despite a signed collective bargaining contract. Nurses have continued working with patients but have delayed their own health care treatments for the past 19 days, the union said. Nurses and Brooklyn officials, including assemblymembers Jo Anne Simon and Phara Souffrant Forrest, planned a “Speak Out” at the hospital on Thursday.
Nurses at The Brooklyn Hospital Center averted going on strike in early January as one of seven safety-net hospitals which hashed out agreements with management, the Brooklyn Eagle reported. More than 4,200 nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian still remain on the picket line, six weeks into the wider strike action.
