PARK SLOPE — NYPD RELEASED BODY CAM footage on Thursday, Jan. 29, showing the fatal police shooting of Michael Lynch, a 62-year-old former NYPD officer and retired FDNY lieutenant, following a tense standoff inside NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital earlier this month, according to the NY Daily News.
Police say Lynch barricaded himself in an eighth-floor room on Jan. 7, cut himself and took an elderly patient and a hospital security guard hostage while armed with a shard of porcelain. Lynch repeatedly refused commands to drop the weapon and when he advanced towards officers, they shot him, authorities said. He later died from his injuries. The incident is under investigation by the New York State Attorney General.
The video identifies the officers who fired as Jason Liu and Brandon Bradley of the 78th Precinct. The head of the Police Benevolent Association, Patrick Hendry, defended the officers’ actions, citing the danger to hospital staff and patients.
Lynch’s family attorney criticized police and hospital staff, saying de-escalation efforts were insufficient. Lynch’s family described him as a lifelong public servant who sought medical help and never returned home.
