ONE POLICE PLAZA — NYPD COMMISSIONER Jessica Tisch, whom current Mayor Eric Adams appointed a year ago to lead the nation’s largest police force, has agreed to continue in this role under the next administration, she and Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced on Wednesday, Nov. 19, according to several news sources.
The New York Times reported that Tisch, in an email memo to her officers, stated that Mamdani has “asked me to serve as police commissioner in his administration, and after several conversations with him, I have agreed. Leading this department is the greatest privilege of my life, and I am proud to continue doing it.”
Mamdani, in a joint statement, said, “I look forward to working with Commissioner Jessica Tisch to deliver genuine public safety in New York City. I have admired her work cracking down on corruption in the upper echelons of the police department, driving down crime in New York City, and standing up for New Yorkers in the face of authoritarianism.”
Although there was speculation whether Commissioner Tisch would accept Mamdani’s reappointment of her, remaining as the NYPD’s leader could provide a smooth transition to the new city administration. The two leaders differ on several aspects of policing, but Mamdani, while campaigning, had vowed to keep Tisch in her role.
