PROSPECT HEIGHTS — THE BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY (BPL) WILL ANNOUNCE ITS 2025 BOOK PRIZE NOMINEES in conjunction with the Brooklyn Book Festival. The 20th annual festival brings authors and bibliophiles together in a set of events and readings that has expanded beyond a day-long vendor fair. This year’s book festival runs from Sept. 14 to 22. The BPL’s librarians and staff, who draw on their broad knowledge of literature and the many populations they serve, select the nominees whose writings capture the spirit of the borough.
The first of two BPL Book Prize events takes place on Friday, Sept. 19, with the Shortlist Reading and Panel Discussion held at the Central Library’s Dweck Center across from Grand Army Plaza in Prospect Heights. This event is in panel discussion with the 2025 shortlist nominees in conversation with Jess Harwick, a BPL librarian and prize judge. The BPL Book Prize’s Winners Reading & Panel Discussion takes place at the Brooklyn Book Festival on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
The BPL Book Prize was established in 2015 by young, engaged Brooklynites who are passionate about the library and work to engage new patrons.

SUNSET PARK — “As a resident of Marine Park, one of the great surprises I found biking around Industry City and visiting Japan Village was to discover Bush Terminal Park. I continue to be amazed at the serene hideaways that the city offers in some of the busiest places — and, still, with an iconic view.”

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — ‘A miracle that no one was killed …’ That’s what neighbors are saying about the collapse of the Hotel St. George marquee. Shown in this photograph are workmen beginning the removal and repair of the historic, old neon sign at the corner, referencing a relic of Brooklyn Heights’ past: the St. George Hotel.

ATLANTIC AVENUE — Exhausted shopper with cluster of bags and goods from mall at Boerum Place stops to look at huge construction site across the street. “Is that REALLY going to be a jail??” Her male companion is reassuring, “Nothing like Rikers … this is 21st Century.”
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Overheard in line at one of most popular pastry outlets on Montague Street: “Hope I can get them into a camp …” A mother with two pre-schoolers in tow was showing a friend the Dodge Y flyer for Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, April 18.
