BOROUGH PARK — MAIMONIDES CANCER CENTER HAS LAUNCHED A POWERFUL new technology and approach to standard radiation oncology therapy with a state-of-the-art Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART) system that can reduce treatment from weeks to days, and with better results.
Maimonides is one of the first hospitals in Brooklyn and the country to employ ART, which enables its radiation oncologists to provide better treatment for patients with even the most complex cancer cases, delivering more powerful radiation therapy while maintaining safety and efficacy. While Maimonides has used linear accelerator (LINAC)-based radiation therapy for years, this new technology promises more powerful and precise treatments in fewer doses.
ART offers a responsive solution to a main challenge of traditional LINAC therapy: providers must rely on CT scans taken before treatment that capture the size, shape and location of a patient’s tumor. During the weeks between imaging and the radiation treatment, a tumor’s position or volume can change, negatively affecting treatment accuracy. The system’s adaptive replanning capabilities enable clinicians to easily perform more frequent imaging, sometimes daily, to detect changes in the tumor’s structure.
ART can concurrently limit the dose of radiation to normal parts of the body, reducing side effects and lessening the risk of complications.
