GREENPOINT AND CLINTON HILL – THE NEW YORK CITY Department of Transportation on Tuesday announced a three-year pilot of streetside “microhubs,” designated safe spots for trucks to transfer packages for the last leg of delivery to smaller, greener vehicles, such as cargo bikes, handcarts and electric vans. The program is part of the DOT’s strategy to reduce truck traffic and make freight delivery more environmentally friendly.
Five initial locations will include three in Manhattan and two under the BQE: one in Greenpoint on Meeker Avenue between Sutton and Kingsland, and one in Clinton Hill on Park Avenue between Washington and Hall. More hubs in high-demand areas will be added as the pilot progresses.
Each hub will be designated for one delivery company, which must maintain the spaces and share data and feedback. Zones will be about 80-100 feet, depending on location, and will have space for package sorting and transfer. The agency may also add safety barriers, storage spaces, weather protection, lighting, and areas for vehicle storage, maintenance or charging. Designs will be updated if problems are observed.
