LONDON — The ecstasy and the agony — winning a key game but then falling in the match: Coco Gauff of the United States reacts after winning a game against Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in their semifinal women’s singles match at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Gauff lost to Karolina Muchová of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(10).

BOLIVIA — Iconic cholita attire, historically adapted from Spanish colonial dress, has been entirely reclaimed as a badge of honor: A woman competes in the “Cholita Pacena 2026” pageant, celebrating Aymara women’s culture and traditions, in La Paz, Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
The bowler hat is a signature part of cholita dress. Cholita women, many of them Indigenous Aymara and Quechua women in Bolivia, faced generations of discrimination and exclusion, including being barred from some public spaces and transportation. Now, many cholitas have lucrative businesses.
The Aymara are a South American Indigenous group whose communities have historically lived in the Andean Altiplano, mainly in Bolivia and Peru.
FRANCE — Both hands up if you’re a winner! Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar celebrates as he crosses the finish line to win the over-115.5-mile sixth stage of the Tour de France cycling race, starting in Pau and finishing in Gavarnie-Gèdre, Thursday.
Pogačar achieved a personal best, riding the final 27 miles alone and opening a large gap on his rivals. He also won the day’s yellow jersey from Norway’s Torstein Træen, who crashed on the Tourmalet. Still, he persevered to complete Stage 6.
Gavarnie-Gèdre is in southwestern France’s Hautes-Pyrénées region.

Australia’s Ben O’Connor, competing in his fifth Tour de France, is a two-time Tour stage winner.
ROME — Extreme heat sets off nose dive: A cormorant dives into a glass of water during a hot summer day at the Bioparco Zoo, Thursday.
There are several species of cormorant, a black waterbird often described as resembling a cross between a goose and a loon. Some species are larger than others. Among them are Neotropic cormorants, Brandt’s cormorants, Pelagic cormorants and Great cormorants.
ROME — Nature’s delight: A Nile lechwe antelope tries to help her newborn calf stand upright after giving birth at the Bioparco Zoo on Thursday.
The Nile lechwe is an endangered species native to Sudan and Ethiopia. A hydroelectric dam built just south of the floodplains where this aquatic antelope species lives has become its largest threat.
Antelope are in a separate scientific family from deer. Unlike deer, whose males shed their antlers every year, antelopes grow permanent horns. Antelopes are actually more closely related to cattle, sheep and goats.
SPAIN — Stay inside and watch from your balcony if you don’t want to get gored or trampled: Revelers run alongside Victoriano del Río’s fighting bulls during the third running of the bulls at the San Fermín festival in Pamplona, Thursday.
Aside from the bull runs and full-stadium bullfights, the San Fermín festival recreates several traditions, including the daily promenade of Giants and Big Heads.
The group includes four pairs of Kings and Queens representing the four corners of the world — Africa, America, Asia and Europe — along with additional costumed figures.
HONG KONG — Looks like a plushie, but it’s a real-life doggie: A dog sits on its owner at a dining table inside the Wan Land Cafe on the first day dogs are legally permitted in restaurants in Hong Kong, Thursday.
Food establishments that were granted permits are expected to abide strictly by the law and licensing conditions. Customers are also expected to control their dogs and respect other diners. A 90-member team is charged with visiting each of these establishments to educate managers on compliance regulations.
Before the law took effect, only service animals and police dogs were permitted inside eateries.
