STATEWIDE — PROPOSITION ONE, A STATEWIDE MEASURE to protect abortion rights and prevent discrimination, is back on the ballot in New York for the Nov. 5 election. The New York Equal Protection of Law Amendment would “prohibit the denial of rights to an individual based on their ethnicity, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy or reproductive status.” It had previously been certified to appear on the ballot but hit a setback after a court challenge from anti-abortion and religious conservatives. The office of Attorney General Letitia James appealed, and on Tuesday, an Appellate Court ruling reinstated it.
“Today’s decision to put the Equal Rights Amendment back on the ballot in November is a huge victory in our efforts to protect our basic rights and freedoms,” James said in a statement Tuesday. “The ERA was advanced to protect access to abortion care, enshrine this basic right in our constitution, and protect people from discrimination. We will continue to do everything in our power to protect these rights.”
