On Wednesday, September 17, Mayor Bill de Blasio showed off his skills on the diamond in the Annual Mayor vs. City Council Softball Game at MCU Park in Coney Island, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones.
The free event was a high scoring affair, with, at times, not so pretty play.
Team de Blasio committed a whopping total of 10 errors and after two innings, the mayor, who played first base, exited the game, after injuring himself during his first at-bat. He ended up going 0-1 as well as committing a few miscues on defense. De Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, also played in the competitive game.
The mayor’s team made a valiant comeback effort. During the game, his team trailed 7-0, yet still was able to claim a lead. In the end, however, it wasn’t enough as the City Council team, led by pitcher and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, exploded on offense, claiming the victory by a final score of 17-13.
Former Borough President Marty Markowitz served as the game’s announcer.
