
NATIONWIDE — MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL MUST STRENGTHEN AND IMPROVE ITS CYBERSECURITY PRACTICES as part of a $52 million multistate settlement to rectify damages by a long-term data breach, NY Attorney General Letitia James announced on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
A multi-state investigation revealed a data breach over several years of one of its guest reservation databases for one of its subsidiaries, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide. Intruders had infiltrated Starwood’s guest reservation system, going four years without being detected. The resulting data breach affected 131.5 million customers nationwide, including millions of New Yorkers.
The settlement with 50 attorneys general requires Marriott to significantly overhaul and strengthen its data security to protect customers’ private information and pay
In December 2018, news first broke about the data breach, which also involved Westin and Sheraton Hotels subsidiaries.
