The Brooklyn Rugby men traveled to Southampton, Long Island on Saturday to take on Montauk Rugby Club in the first round of the Empire GU Playoffs, falling 13-0 to the division’s top seed.
Montauk, which finished the fall season undefeated in Division 3 – NYC, led 6-0 at halftime after successfully converting on a couple of penalties that were called deep in the Brooklyn end. The game was played in snowy, wet conditions, where defense owned the day for both sides. However, despite the conditions, both sides had a variety of scoring opportunities throughout the game, but were unable to capitalize despite strong support all around.
Then late in the second half, Montauk was able to take advantage of an overload, going across for the game’s first and only try. The conversion was successful, putting Montauk up 13-0, where the score would remain until the final whistle.
Brooklyn will face Rockaway in the Empire GU consolation round on Saturday, April 11, with a chance to earn a spot in the Empire GU Round of 8.
