On Monday, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens raised $130,000 in support of 160 programs and services at the annual Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Memorial Golf Classic.

Dedicated to the late Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan, the Golf Classic serves as one of Catholic Charities largest fundraisers throughout the year. The event is held at the Sands Point Golf Club in Sands Point, N.Y., the home course of Catholic Charities Board of Trustee member Peter J. Striano.

Golfers were treated to an event that started with breakfast, followed by scramble play on the course. The 20 foursomes included many of Catholic Charities partner organizations and donors.

This year, Catholic Charities hosted three former professional athletes from the National Hockey League, Catholic Charities’ Jean Potvin, associate director for Corporate Giving and Major Gifts, Bob Nystrom, who played on multiple Stanley Cup-winning teams for the New York Islanders, and Steve Webb, a standout for the Islanders from 1996 to 2003. In addition to closest-to-the-pin and longest drive contests, golfers were enticed to shoot for a hole in one at two of the courses Par 3s, for a chance to win $10,000 or a two-year lease on a 2015 Audi.

The evening portion of the event included a cocktail and buffet reception with Master of Ceremonies, Ken Rosato, Emmy-Award winning anchor of WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News. Further funds were raised through a silent auction that featured prizes such as: an iPad, JetBlue airline tickets, NFL tickets, St. John’s men’s basketball tickets at Madison Square Garden, a trip to Puerto Rico, jewelry, autographed professional sports and college sports memorabilia and more. Additionally, a 50/50 raffle was conducted.

The late Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan provided vision, leadership and support to Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens for more than 50 years. Proceeds from the Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Memorial Golf Classic help Catholic Charities continue to reach out to the people of Brooklyn and Queens through more than 160 human service programs.
