DOWNTOWN — A MAN FROM CYPRESS HILLS received an indeterminate prison term of three to six years on March 10 for running a red light at roughly twice the posted speed limit, striking and killing a bicyclist, then abandoning the scene without reporting the crash.
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, Julio Sandoval, 34, was traveling approximately 47 mph in a 25 mph zone on Atlantic Avenue the night of Oct. 15, 2021, when he struck Jose Ramos, 56, who was riding in a marked crosswalk alongside his wife at Essex Street.
Ramos was taken to Interfaith Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from blunt-force trauma. Sandoval pleaded guilty Feb. 10, 2026, to one count of second-degree manslaughter before Supreme Court Justice Dena Douglas.
“This defendant showed a callous disregard for public safety by choosing to speed and run a red light, taking the life of a cyclist,” said Distric Attorney Eric Gonzalez.
Sandoval had been arrested Jan. 9, 2023, following an investigation.
