BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — New York City officials briefly considered canceling the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Saturday night, with a severe thunderstorm on the radar. But as hundreds of thousands eagerly awaited the display, officials decided to launch early.
The display, taking place on the nation’s 250th anniversary, was extra special this year, with fireworks barges on both the East and Hudson rivers and another launch site right on the Brooklyn Bridge. The display went off with just a minor hitch — a small fire broke out on the bridge. FDNY quickly extinguished the blaze, and the historic span was in good shape for Sunday traffic.
This year, a number of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill residents were allowed to view the exhibition from the Promenade — an improvement over last year, when locals were locked out of the prime viewing area. However, one mother told the Brooklyn Eagle that tickets were not a necessity. “We just watched the fireworks from the foot of Cranberry Street,” she said.
