WEEKSVILLE — A NEW EXHIBIT ENTITLED “Peace in Destruction: Art from Rikers Island” opens Wednesday, June 3, at the Weeksville Heritage Center.
The exhibit is presented by Groundswell, a local nonprofit focused on youth-based art and social justice.
The exhibit features murals created between 2008 and 2019 by Groundswell with young people at Rikers Island. This is the first time most of these murals, which explore themes including incarceration and healing and transformation through art, will be seen outside of the prison.
The opening will take place on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., and is free and open to the public. The exhibit will remain open through June 27. More information can be found at the Weeksville Heritage Center website.
The Weeksville Heritage Center was awarded a $1 million grant from New York state earlier this year to support the preservation of Black history and culture.
