TEHRAN — Note to U.S. president — maybe return to diplomacy now, Ayatollah seems to have young female tech-savvy supporters: Pro-government demonstrators chant slogans, Monday, May 4, 2026, during their gathering at Enqelab-e-Eslami (Islamic Revolution) Square in Iran. One of them holds a picture of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
Khamenei, now 56, was reportedly injured in the military strike that killed the previous Ayatollah, his father, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the opening days of the U.S.- and Israeli-led war against Iran.
Sources say the younger Khamenei, who has stayed largely out of the public view, sustained severe facial injuries and disfigurement.
MUMBAI — Rare moment, when an opposing player congratulates the equivalent of a bases-loaded homerun: Lucknow Super Giants’ Mohammed Shami, right, reacts after Mumbai Indians’ Ryan Rickelton hits a boundary during the Indian Premier League cricket match in India, Monday. The Mumbai Indians won by six wickets, scoring 229/4 against the Giants’ 228/5.

TOKYO — A fish with traits to which Japanese culture aspires: Colorful carp streamers flutter in the air beneath Tokyo Tower, Tuesday, May 5, 2026, as Japan celebrates National Children’s Day, a tradition marked by flying carp streamers.
Also called koinobori, these streamers are actually windsocks designed to “swim” and flutter in the wind like real-life fish swimming upstream, representing perseverance, growth, health, strength and success.
CAPE VERDE — Seemingly carefree beachcomber contrasts the hantavirus turmoil within sight on an anchored cruise ship: The MV Hondius cruise ship is anchored at a port in Praia, Monday.
Officials are investigating how a husband and wife were infected by this virus, which is transmitted through the fluids and excrement of rodents. It is believed they were part of a shore leave wildlife expedition. Five others may be infected.
The MV Hondius made several stops in remote, ecologically diverse regions, including mainland Antarctica, South Georgia, Nightingale Island, Tristan da Cunha, Saint Helena and Ascension Island.
NEW YORK — ‘It moves along the floor, it collects dust …’ Colin Angle, longtime CEO of Roomba vacuums, unveils a four-legged prototype of artificial pet Daphne, called a Familiar, at The WSJ Future of Everything, Monday.
Powered by an Nvidia processor, the Familiar is programmed for emotional connection instead of household chores. Daphne was designed to resemble a bear and built to be affordable.
MANHATTAN — Brooklynite, genius innovator, manages to bring in a significant other disguised as fashion statement: Jordan Roth arrives at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit gala, celebrating the opening of the “Costume Art” exhibition on Monday, in New York.
“It’s a deeply magical experience to live inside this piece,” Jordan told Vogue. The dress was created by London-based couturier Robert Wun.
MANHATTAN — ‘Wait, you paid a hundred thousand dollars to blow a bubble on the stairs?’ Rachel Sennott arrives at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit gala on Monday.
Beyoncé returned to the Met Gala for the first time in a decade, bedecked in Givenchy Haute Couture.
MANHATTAN — Close-up of a casting couch stare — how could anyone resist those whiskers? Former movie producer Harvey Weinstein appears in Manhattan criminal court on Tuesday, in New York.
The retrial of this highly-publicized case is expected to last about six weeks and marks Weinstein’s third go-round for the same sexual assault charge from former actress Jessica Mann. Judge Curtis Farber of the New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan aims to conclude the trial by May 15.
Weinstein’s first conviction was overturned. A second trial resulted in a split verdict.
