CARROLL GARDENS — DISSATISFIED WITH PARKING ENFORCEMENT, Community Board 6’s Transportation Committee recommended stripping the New York City Police Department of its ticketing responsibilities and returning the job to the city’s Department of Transportation, according to StreetsBlog. DOT had been in charge of handing out parking tickets until 1996, when the responsibility was transferred to the NYPD under the Giulini administration.
The resolution will be voted on by the full board on April 8. “There’s just a growing awareness that something’s not right with parking enforcement,” Committee Co-Chairman Doug Gordon said, according to the blog.
When the traffic agents worked under DOT, they were routinely derided as “ Brownies,” derided and even physically assaulted, according to a 2020 Gotham Gazette opinion piece opposing the return to DOT, written by officials in union CWA District One and Local 1181.
