NEW YORK STATE — NEW YORK ATTORNEY GENERAL LETITIA JAMES announced a settlement on Wednesday with gun accessory manufacturer Mean Arms, barring it from selling its detachable magazine lock in New York and requiring $1.75 million in restitution tied to the 2022 Buffalo mass shooting in a Tops grocery store.
The state alleged the company’s magazine lock, marketed as compliant with New York law, could be easily removed, allowing the shooter to convert a rifle into an illegal assault weapon using 30-round magazines. The Office of the Attorney General sued the Georgia-based firm in 2023, claiming it advertised and provided instructions for removing the device.
As part of the agreement, Mean Arms must stop sales of the product in New York and notify sellers that it cannot be resold in the state. “Today, justice looks like accountability, and we have ensured that this device will never be sold in our state again,” James said.
Restitution will be distributed to victims’ families and survivors.
