GOWANUS — METROPOLITAN TRANSIT AUTHORITY BUS DRIVER Christopher Accettulli said he was present for the birth of his own daughter 25 years ago, but “was far away from the action.” That wasn’t the case Friday night, when the veteran bus driver helped deliver a healthy baby girl onboard the B37 bus.
Accettulli, who has been driving for the MTA for 20 years, pulled the bus over at Third Avenue and Ninth Street in Gowanus after hearing a woman in the back repeatedly say “hospital.” When Accettulli went to check her out, he found she was in active labor — and he immediately jumped into action. With the phone assistance of emergency responders, he helped deliver the baby — the birth happened quickly, he said — and wrapped the newborn in his coat.
“All I thought about was making sure the baby was okay. Everything else was secondary for me,” Accettulli said.
