NATIONWIDE — THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY and OpenAI have reached an agreement for Disney to become the first major content licensing partner on Sora, OpenAI’s generative AI video platform, OpenAI announced Thursday. As part of the three-year agreement, Sora will be able to generate short videos from user prompts that can be shared by fans on Disney outlets, drawing from a set of more than 200 animated characters and environments from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars. In addition, ChatGPT Images will be able to create images drawing from the same library. In addition, Disney will become a major customer of OpenAI, and will make a $1 billion equity investment.
The image library includes not only long-time stars like Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Cinderella, but also Marvel and Lucasfilm characters like Black Panther, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Darth Vader and many more.
“Bringing together Disney’s iconic stories and characters with OpenAI’s groundbreaking technology puts imagination and creativity directly into the hands of Disney fans in ways we’ve never seen before,” Robert A. Iger, the chief executive of Disney, said in a statement.
The agreement does not include any human talent likenesses or voices. OpenAI committed to age-appropriate policies and other controls.
