INDIA — Awaiting rescue while nature seeks revenge: A girl carries a baby while waiting for their relatives during rescue operations, as residents evacuate their homes and move to safer areas after the River Chenab overflowed due to heavy rainfall, breaching the danger mark in Garkhal, Akhnoor, Wednesday, Sep. 3, 2025.
The Chenab flows through the Punjab region, which is called “India’s breadbasket,” because of its agricultural importance to the entire country.
AFGHANISTAN — Nature’s revenge: A local resident walks through a partially collapsed house in Dara Noor, Kunar province, Sept. 2, 2025 — an area already devastated by Sunday’s powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake that killed many people and destroyed villages in eastern Afghanistan. On Tuesday, the region suffered another 5.2 earthquake, complicating aid and rescue operations.
Kunar province is roughly four hours by car, through rugged and mountainous terrain, from Afghanistan’s capital city, Kabul. Earthquakes rumble through Afghanistan frequently, as the Hindu Kush mountain range sits on the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
QUEENS — The roar of a winner: Carlos Alcaraz, of Spain, reacts after defeating Jiri Lehecka, of the Czech Republic, during the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Open tennis championships, Sept. 2, 2025, in New York. Alcaraz won in three sets of 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4. He now advances to the semifinals to compete against Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in a match to be played Friday, Sept. 5.
Alcaraz ranks #2 in Men’s Singles, while Djokovic ranks #7.
BEIJING — The usual suspects: Front from left, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrive at a military parade to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Japan’s World War II surrender in China, Sept. 3, 2025.
Japan’s envoys formally surrendered aboard the USS Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945. It is still debated whether Japan surrendered because of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki or because of the Soviet Union’s entering the war.
The warship aboard which Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender was named for the home state of then-President Harry S. Truman. Afterward, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Commander in the Southwest Pacific and Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, signed the document.
ST. PETER’S SQUARE — The pope always stands out in a crowd: Pope Leo XIV waves as he arrives for his weekly general audience in The Vatican, Sept.3, 2025.
The Vatican News has previewed Pope Leo’s announcement — scheduled for Friday — that the Castel Gandolfo will become part of his Borgo Laudato si’ ecological initiative. This opens the Papal villa complex, including a farm, to the public for educational tours and programs.
MOSCOW — Paired with a sunset that serves: A model wears a creation by Russian designer Julia Dalakian on a runway on the Floating Bridge at the Moscow Fashion Week at Zaryadye park, Sept. 1, 2025, with the Kremlin in the background.
The event, which ran from Aug. 28 to Sept. 2, showcased the latest fashions from Russian and international designers, lectures, a market, a business showroom, and the World Fashion Shorts film festival.
Designer Dalakian opened her first studio in Moscow in 1989 and, amid success, established her own label in 1996. “Her collections are typically characterised by a laid-back, sexy style with softly draping, preferably transparent fabrics and bold décolletés,” according to Míele.
BUENOS AIRES — The thrill, the passion, the heat of the tango: A couple competes in the stage category finals of the World Tango Championship, in Argentina, Sept. 2, 2025. The Argentine couple Leandro Bojko and Micaela García were crowned champions of the Stage category.
Buenos Aires is the city of tango, a dance form believed to have evolved from a pastiche of cultures in the late 19th century in the region called Rio de la Plata, between Argentina and Uruguay, and was a vernacular dance with origins in political dissent.
UKRAINE — Conflict continues along with evacuation efforts: A police officer helps Maria Hodus, 90, to come out of a van during an evacuation from Kostiantynivka, Sept. 2, 2025.
As Russia has intensified its bombing of the city, some residents fear that they waited too long to leave their homes.
