NEW YORK — 10/10 for charisma, cuteness off the charts: George, an Australian terrier, competes in the terrier group competition of the 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Tuesday, at the Jacob Javits Center.
George won Best of Breed on Tuesday. His breeders are Carole Morse and Ellison Armfield.
There are several breeds of terrier, and each has its own judging category. Other breeds include Bedlington, Biewer, Black Russian, Boston and Bull Terrier.
MILAN — ‘Royal watch’ in full effect: Britain’s Princess Anne, chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) member election commission, watches the IOC Climate Action Award 2025 ceremony at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026.
Hockey player Hugo Inglis from New Zealand, rugby sevens player Kevin Wekesa from Kenya and organizations, the National Olympic Committee of the Netherlands and the International Biathlon Union won this year.
The award recognizes efforts to address climate change and make the entire Olympic global network more sustainable.
JAPAN — Fun-loving demon on water skis: A student depicting “Oni”, demon-like figures in Japanese folklore, skims across the water on water skis during the annual Bean Throwing Festival near Hakone Shrine in Hakone, Tuesday.
As part of the festival, which takes place the day before the traditional start of spring in Japan’s old calendar, people throw roasted soybeans and chant to ensure good luck for the year ahead. This custom, Mamemaki, drives away oni, or demons.
Different regions of Japan have their own versions of chants.
NEPAL: — Nepalese police training academy: Newly recruited temporary police officers participate in a training session on Wednesday, in Dhankuta, about 242 miles east of Kathmandu, ahead of the March 5 general election.
Nearly 150,000 temporary police personnel will be recruited, including 133,980 for the Nepal Police and 15,110 for the Armed Police Force.
Their 40-day deployment includes a training period and placement in more than eight thousand of the most sensitive polling stations.
ITALY — The need for speed on ice is slicker, where top speeds can exceed 50 mph: A speed skating athlete from the U.S. warms up at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Rho, Wednesday.
Speed skating, which became an Olympic sport in 1924, actually dates back to the late 17th century as a way to traverse frozen bodies of water faster.
TOKYO — Nothing like a good morning sumo training sesh to get the juices flowing: Ukrainian sumo wrestler Danilo Yavhushyshyn, known by his Japanese name Aonishiki Arata, right, trains during a morning practice at Ajigawa stable in Tokyo, Wednesday.
Sumo is a Japanese martial art and national, traditional combat sport with roots in Shintoism.
Wrestlers are called rikishi, and a stable is where young rikishi live and train.
BUDAPEST — Violence brought him a guilty verdict and a sentence of eight years: Maja T., a German anti-fascist activist, who faced up to 24 years in prison on all charges for assaulting and injuring neo-Nazis in Budapest in February 2023, looks up while reading a statement in court in Hungary, Wednesday, at the Budapest-Capital Regional Court.
The 25-year-old identifies as non-binary; Hungary recognizes only male and female genders.
Maja T.’s case drew international attention when Germany’s Constitutional Court ruled last February that it had been unlawful to extradite Maja T., since the decision violated the European Union’s Charter on Fundamental Rights.
BANGLADESH — The cruel aftermath following an awful, unjustified demise: Meghna Rani, wife of Dipu Chandra Das, weeps inside her home in Tarakanda village, Mymensingh District, Bangladesh, Jan. 9, 2026.
Das was a Hindu garment worker who was beaten, hanged from a tree and set on fire after being accused of making derogatory remarks about Islam at a factory event. Investigators later reported there was no evidence to support the allegation.
Yasin Arafat, the man whom authorities believe orchestrated the attack on Das, was arrested in early January.
