
Chief Administrative Judge Joseph A. Zayas announced on Tuesday that the court system is actively seeking applicants for the positions of Law Library Clerk and Law Library Assistant for positions across the state.
The NYS Law Library Clerk Examination and the Law Library Assistant Examination will be administered at test centers statewide on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023.
Candidates interested in taking either exam must file their applications starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, through Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023. Applications can be filed using the link on the NYS Courts Careers website (https://ww2.nycourts.gov/careers/exams.shtml).
Law Library Clerks perform a variety of clerical duties in a law library. In some cases, they may also assume the lead responsibility for a library with a limited scope or subject specialization that serves five or more full-time judges, law clerks, and court attorneys. To be eligible to take the Law Library Clerk Examination, applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience in a library setting.
The starting salary for NYS Law Library Clerks for 2023 ranges from $48,943 to $53,578, depending on location. Other benefits include a regular work schedule, 20 paid vacation days in the first year (increasing to 27 paid vacation days after seven years), 13 paid holidays annually, excellent health insurance and retirement benefits, and promotional opportunities.
Law Library Assistants perform paraprofessional library duties, either in support of professional library staff or as the highest-level library staff member in a library with at least one specialized collection serving 10 or more full-time judges, law clerks and court attorneys. Eligibility requirements for the Law Library Assistant Open-Competitive Examination vary depending on educational and work experience. Law Library Clerk titleholders, with permanent competitive class status are eligible to take the Law Library Assistant Promotional Examination.
The starting salary for NYS Law Library Assistants for 2023 ranges from $54,768 to $59,403, depending on location. The benefits package is similar to that of Law Library Clerks.
