MILL BASIN — A NEW PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL may be built in Mill Basin. The city’s School Construction Authority is currently reviewing a vacant lot and parking area at 7001 Avenue U, according to Pix11.
The proposed school would span the full block between East 70th and East 71st streets, from Veterans Avenue to Avenue U, and serve about 676 students. Officials say it would ease overcrowding at nearby schools, including James Madison, Midwood and Edward R. Murrow high schools.
The site was presented to the local community board last week and remains open for public comment through Feb. 25. If approved, the proposal would advance to the City Council later this year for approval to join the city’s public school system.
New York opened seven new public schools this year across Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.
