Good morning. Today is the 41st day of the year. Before the federal government started to insure banks in the 1930s, banks sometimes had to close their doors if they didn’t have enough money on deposit, and the unlucky depositors often lost most of their savings.  On Feb, 10, 1902, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported on such a case in Detroit, where visitors to the City Savings Bank were greeted by closed doors and the notice: “This bank is in the hands of George L. Maltz, state banking commissioner.” The situation was considered critical because the bank contained the entire accounts of the Detroit Board of Education and the Detroit Public Library. Eventually, the bank was placed into receivership, and one of the directors was arrested for theft.

Well-known people who were born today include singer-songwriter Donovan, former baseball player Lenny Dykstra, singer Roberta Flack (“Killing Me Softly With His Song”), Brooklyn-born sprinter Justin Gatlin, opera singer Leontyne Price and Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz.
