ALL HAIL ENDALE ARCH, restored gateway to Prospect Park. Thanks to the Tiger Baron Foundation, City Councilman Lander's efforts and the unending devotion of Prospect Park Alliance, some key original splendor has been returned to the vision that created our greatest park.

AFTER YEARS OF UNCERTAINTY, the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission has given its stamp of approval to the Angel Guardian Home in Dyker Heights. It is the first Dyker building to be granted such a distinction. BUT the Historic Districts Council has criticized the LPC, saying it was only “half a loaf,” as another key building in the orphanage complex should have been part of the designation envelope.

VETERANS DAY, NOVEMBER 11, was overcast in Brooklyn, but rain seemed to be held off by a higher power until the end of a morning ceremony in Cadman Plaza Park. Friends of the Brooklyn War Memorial and public officials gathered to honor 100-year-old KATHERINE HORTON, a pioneering African American WWII veteran.

BELIEF IN THE PROMISE OF CITIES: That is one of the tenets of Totem, a development firm that has done its homework on community-driven projects and use of innovative design. Their latest project is a much-needed mixed-use development in Sunset Park.

DOUBLING DOWN ON GREENPOINT — and all of Brooklyn. That’s the way two brothers, fourth generation operators of the Acme Smoked Fish company, founded in 1906, have expressed their decision to remain and expand facilities in Greenpoint. Their editorial opinion is titled simply, bluntly “Brooklyn is where it’s at…” but herein they tell why Acme remains so faithful to Brooklyn as home base.

BASEBALL JERSEYS WITH THE NAME ‘BROOKLYN’ – One of the most pleasant seaside settings, a baseball diamond in Coney Island, will continue to host the Brooklyn Cyclones. News that the team would remain — but as a High-A team, rather than AAA — should not diminish the ardor of fans who relish again singing ‘Take me out to the ball game.’

OUR HISTORIC FORT – Earlier this month the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Hamilton held a Veterans Day ceremony to honor DINO LAMIA, a WWII vet who recently turned 99. Assemblymember PETER ABBATE, who represents Lamia’s district, attended, as did lots of official Army brass from the New York, including Col. CRAIG MARTIN, Commander of Fort Hamilton.

SUBWAY STATION UPGRADES – A transportation expert writes with authority on how the MTA can get more local support for station upgrades, like the recent installation of new elevators at the busy Sunset Park/Bay Ridge station.
