KIDS’ LOW COVID-19 VACCINE RATES CALLED A GUT PU KIDS’ LOW COVID-19 VACCINE RATES CALLED A GUT PUNCH: Suspicion, misinformation, complacency and delays because of the holidays and bad weather have combined to produce alarmingly low COVID-19 vaccination rates in U.S. children ages 5 to 11, authorities say.

As of Tuesday, just over 17% were fully vaccinated, more than two months after shots for the age group became available. While Vermont is at 48%, California is just shy of 19% and Mississippi is only at 5%.

Vaccinations among the elementary school set surged after the shots were introduced in the fall, but the numbers have crept up slowly since then, and omicron’s explosive spread appears to have had little effect.

NEW YORK TO RECEIVE $6B OF FEDERAL AID FOR TRANSIT NEW YORK TO RECEIVE $6B OF FEDERAL AID FOR TRANSIT: New York City’s subways and commuter rails are getting a $6 billion chunk of federal COVID-19 relief funds.

Sen. Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has received the money as part of more than $14.5 billion in overall federal relief aid.

The aid, contained in COVID-19 relief bills during both the Trump and Biden administrations, has helped the MTA stave off threatened service cutbacks, layoffs and fare hikes.

LOCAL COVID CONTACT TRACING NOW OPTIONAL IN NY: Ne LOCAL COVID CONTACT TRACING NOW OPTIONAL IN NY: New York will no longer require local health departments to conduct contact tracing for people who test positive for COVID-19, state health officials said Tuesday.

The shift will help public health staff across New York focus on testing and vaccination, Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said.

"The big change for New Yorkers is that if you test positive, you should no longer expect a call from your health department," Bassett said during a virtual appearance at an in-person news conference in New York City.
