Oh, Orly: Week of November 12

I have an employee who comes late to work every single day. I don’t know what to do with her anymore. She has been with the company a long time, and I don’t know what to do about it.

Josh S.
Dear Josh,

First, I want to ask you how badly you need this employee. Is her productivity worth the aggravation she causes you? If the answer is no, then you need to have a serious talk with yourself.

Some employees become very comfortable with their job and start slacking because their boss allows it to happen. First, it’s sporadic or once in a while and then it becomes a habit.

A bad habit is not easy to break. It is grandfathered in because you never said anything in the past. I don’t mean you didn’t ask her to be on time; I mean you have allowed it for too long.

The only way out of this situation is usually to let that person go. The reason behind letting them go is actually to set an example for anybody else in the company, making sure everybody understands that if they behave like she did that they will also lose their job.

If you don’t do this, it will only cause you more aggravation because nothing will change. There are plenty of qualified devoted employees looking for jobs right now; there are plenty of good people out there that are willing to be on time and to do right by you and your company.

Make sure that either way you’re in charge and that the failure or success of your company lies with you. Good luck!

No matter how many times I clean my house, my family does not respect me and clean up after themselves. It simply does not matter how often I tell them to do so! What can I do to get them to respect me?

Stacy F.

Dear Stacy,

Well, there are two ways to go about this, one being a bit drastic in nature. You do NO housecleaning and no cooking and no giving of any kind for a full week. This includes doing NO laundry, etc.

After a week or during that same week you might get some complaints, and at that point your only answer needs to be, “I am not a maid.”

The second way you can deal with this is to have a family meeting to inform everyone that you are no longer going to do anything in the house and that everyone will have to fend for themselves. Then, take the week off. I would say, if you can, leave for a week and let them really fend for themselves. Do NOT answer the phone. Do NOT call them back to see how they’re doing.

I know those two ways might sound very drastic. Humans in general don’t appreciate something until it is taken away from them. To children, when we give tough love, we take away the TV or the PlayStation or candy or whatever it is that they like to do unless they clean their room.

If we don’t stick to our guns, the children will continue to take advantage of our niceness and confuse it with weakness. Keep in mind – and I PROMISE you – you will only need to do this once. And if they stop respecting you again, remind them by doing it again or saying that you will do it again.

Good luck!

I hear many things on the news that are very negative and it impacts me in a bad way – it’s all anyone talks about. What should I do about it? I do not want any more negativity in my life.

Nicole R.

Dear Nicole,

I am so glad you brought this up. I personally do not listen to the news and I don’t read the newspapers unless the headlines are educational. You see, you do need to be informed but you don’t need to be inundated.

The way I get my news is through Yahoo. It has the top 100 storylines. That takes me about 10 to 20 minutes to go over and see if there is anything in the headlines that is interesting, such as a new medication, something happening in outer space, new research being done, or a new discovery.

World news is also interesting because it affects world economy and this is just for FYI so I look through it and just read the headlines, not the stories. This is the way I keep away from negative information and keep focused on my goals and dreams, and how to make those happen.

I hope this helps!

I am 27 years old and work in the health field. I actually work with cancer patients. I love my job but because of this job I am unable to maintain a healthy relationship.

What should I do? I am not getting any younger.

Thanks.

Prince J.

Dear Prince,

I think you need to prioritize your life. Everything needs nurturing and dedication.

It is not that you can’t maintain a relationship, it is that you did not find the right women who understands what you do and can be confident in her own skin to support you and do her own thing as well.

The right person will come along. Don’t stress about your age because that is the least of your problems.

Be patient and good luck.

I am sitting in a coffee shop and this guy was on his cell phone arguing with someone, yelling and cursing. It was very disturbing and I was afraid to say anything because it looked like a very heated conversation.  Any suggestions when that happens?

Christina N.

Dear Christina,

Some people are not aware of their environment when they are emotional and therefore my suggestion is that you don’t say anything to that person.

Instead, talk to the manager or owner because they have more authority and a good reason to tell the person to lower it down or leave.

If the management does nothing, then feel free to leave. You certainly have a good reason and maybe the management will listen to its customers next time.

Thanks for writing.
