Cuomo says he’ll run for NYC mayor on independent line

CITYWIDE — FORMER GOV. ANDREW CUOMO plans to run on an independent ballot line in the NYC mayoral race, even if he loses the Democratic primary in June, the Daily News reported Tuesday. In a statement, Cuomo said he made the move to appeal to voters who feel the Democratic party “has been hijacked.” He will be listed alongside Mayor Eric Adams and attorney Jim Walden, running on their own independent ballot lines.
Cuomo received immediate flack from his competition, including Queens Assemblymember Zohan Mamdani, who is rapidly gaining popularity in second place. “Andrew Cuomo is scared,” Mamdani said in a statement.
Candidate Comptroller Brad Lander also lambasted Cuomo, calling him a DINO (Democrat-In-Name-Only), and noting that as governor, Cuomo filled his cabinet with Republicans.
Walden said on Twitter that Cuomo has gotten nervous after seeing Mamdani surge. “New Yorkers, if you don’t want a disgraced Governor, a disgraced Mayor, or a Champagne socialist as Mayor, it is time to wake up.”
