AUGUSTA — Down to the wire, touch-and-go, but only at the very end for the sweetest victory in 10 years: Winner Rory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, holds the trophy at the Masters golf tournament, April 13, 2025, in Georgia. McIlroy became just the sixth male golf competitor to achieve a career Grand Slam — winning each of the four major tournaments at least once as a professional golfer. 

The other three tournaments (besides the Masters) are the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship — also known as the British Open, which will be held later this year in McIlroy’s home country.

BROOKLYN — Once commanded by General Robert E. Lee before he joined the Confederacy, historic fort now names a state highway: State Sen. Scarcella-Spanton poses at the Fort Hamilton Veterans Memorial Highway Sign Unveiling with USAG Fort Hamilton Commander Colonel Melissa Cantwell.

As the last active-duty military installation in New York City, Fort Hamilton plays a crucial role in national defense, community engagement and veteran support.

VATICAN — Never missing a mass, and prepped to greet the masses, thanks to new wheels: Pope Francis, right, arrives at the end of the mass on Palm Sunday in St. Peter’s Square, April 13, 2025, for a surprise public appearance. His Eminence Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, vice dean of the College of Cardinals, presided over the solemn liturgical celebration of Palm Sunday and the Passion of the Lord. Following Mass, Pope Francis joined the pilgrims and faithful in the Square.

Afterward, the pontiff re-entered the Basilica for private prayer at the tomb of the Apostle before the monument dedicated to Benedict XV (1854-1922), who reigned during World War I. The sculpture includes olive branches, a symbol of peace.

FRANCE — Three times is the charm: Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands gestures as he approaches the finish line to win the Paris-Roubaix cycling race for the third time in a row, in Roubaix, April 13, 2025. The 161-mile race is nicknamedThe Hell of the Northbecause of its numerous cobblestone sections and reputation for crashes, which Tadej Pogačar discovered 38 km before the finish line. Even with that and a broken chain, he still came in second: one minute and 18 seconds behind van der Poel.

Both the first- and second-place winners have won eight monuments — one-day cycling events — each.

LOS ANGELES — Airbourne, ball in the glove, ready for the roll and throw: Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Tommy Edman makes a catch on a ball hit by Chicago Cubs’ Ian Happ during the third inning of a baseball game on April 13, 2025. The Cubs beat the home team 4-2. Both teams have won 11 games so far this season.

April 15 is Jackie Robinson Day, commemorating the first Black player in the major leagues when he debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers. All MLB players and coaching staff will continue the tradition of wearing Robinson’s No. 42 during Tuesday’s games.

The artificial turf replacement at Cadman Plaza Park in Downtown Brooklyn continued over the weekend.

BROOKLYN — Local legislation in New York aims to stop parks from using turf instead of real grass: Cadman Plaza Park is one of several parks around the city to reevaluate its use of artificial turf. The bill’s supporters warn that artificial turf poses health and environmental risks by trapping heat, contributing to pollution and increasing cancer risks.

However, one site in Bath Beach Park (near Bay 16th St.) completed a Synthetic Turf Field Construction just last year.

The two nations’ leaders each stated that they hold no responsibility for returning the man wrongfully deported to El Salvador despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s April 10 order that they must work to do so.
