Mount Prospect Park Skate Park is at a standstill

After a year of disagreement, both the city and Friends of Mount Prospect Park refuse to back down

A long downhill ramp gives pedestrians and strollers easy access to Mount Prospect Park. When skaters use this same ramp for exit, they will be ‘flying on a downhill incline,’ which will create much danger for pedestrians. Rules demanding that skaters walk down will be entirely unenforceable.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — The battle between the city and Friends of Mount Prospect over a proposed skate park seems to have come to a standstill. Friends of Mount Prospect Park have delivered a petition with over two thousand signatures to City Comptroller Brad Lander’s office, but the city will continue with the project.

The project is part The Skatepark Project, which will build four new skate parks in Brooklyn and the Bronx in an effort to provide youth with safe and inclusive spaces. The Friends of Mount Prospect Park, however, oppose the plan because it requires the paving of green space in Brooklyn, the borough with the least amount of green space per person.

“Green space is precious in Brooklyn,” the Friends of Mount Prospect Park petition reads. “Our city needs to be more resilient and green. We should preserve and enhance the green space in Mount Prospect Park — not pour concrete on top of it.”

No official rendering of the Mount Prospect Park Skate Park has been released to the public, but the Parks and Recreation Department, which is backing the mayor, assured residents it will take all concerns into account in the design.
