EAST NEW YORK — THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION and City Councilmember Sandy Nurse have announced major progress on the revitalization of the East New York Industrial Business Zone and Broadway Junction station complex, aiming to create jobs, public space and economic growth in Brooklyn.
The multi-phase initiative includes a request for proposals for job-generating uses of 70,000+ square feet of industrial space; a $9 million renovation of the East New York Industrial Building, leasing space to small minority- and women-owned businesses in construction and energy efficiency; and an investment of $110 million for upgrades at the Broadway Junction station entrance like new lighting, redesigned intersections and a half-acre Gateway Plaza.
The corporation aims to transform East New York into a hub for green industry and workforce development, ensuring high-paying jobs and safe, vibrant public spaces for Brooklyn residents.
Although Nurse and many area residents are excited about the new development, saying the neighborhood has long been underserved and neglected, others fear that the upgrades at Broadway Junction could lead to gentrification and price out longtime locals, according to Gothamist.
