RUSSIA — These creatures deserve coverage wherever they are: A couple of White-tailed eagles fight while hunting at the Bosfor Vostochny channel in Vladivostok, Feb. 10, 2025. Eagles are among the many species of raptors (from the Latin word “to seize”), along with hawks, falcons, kites, vultures, and owls.
Also called the Eurasian Sea Eagle, this bird does not have a white tail until it is eight years old. Because the White-tailed Eagles are increasing in population, they are not considered an endangered species.
CHINA — This photo captures the ‘speed’ part of speed skating: China’s Gao Tingyu, left, competes against Kazakhstan’s Yevgeniy Koshkin during the men’s 500-meter at the Speed Skating during the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin, Feb. 10, 2025. Mr. Gao, who also won the 2022 Winter Olympics, beat out his closing opponent, Wataru Morishige of Japan.
In photography, motion blur is the technique for intentionally capturing speeding objects. The technique has become so popular that it is now a separate genre. Motion blur contrasts with stop-motion, in which action is halted, such as capturing skiers in mid-air.
GERMANY — Colors of politics — alternative roses for the Alternative party: The light of a spotlight falls on the face of Alice Weidel, the top candidate of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), as she lifts blue roses after her speech at an election campaign in Heidenheim, Feb. 9, 2025. This marks the first time that the far-right AfD, founded in 2013, has nominated its own chancellor. Although the party has received high approval ratings, Weidel does not have high odds of winning the chancellery, as other political parties are refusing to work with the Afd, the second strongest after the center-right Christian Democrats.
Interestingly, Ms. Weidel is in a same-gender marriage with a Sri-Lanka-born Swiss woman, even though her party has an anti-LGBTQ+ and nationalist stance.

Days before the Super Bowl, President Trump had called Mahomes “a winner,” which the quarterback thought was “cool to hear.” Trump attended that game.

The faithful in Bulgaria believe that, when consecrated, honey has great healing and restorative powers.

District Attorney Jason Schmidt said the author was too stunned to fight back when he was attacked while delivering a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution, which holds summer programs each year in the humanities, ranging from music to literary topics and religion.
Ironically, Rushdie was speaking about keeping writers safe at the moment he was attacked. The charge against Matar includes attempted murder.
NEW ORLEANS — More than the dry cleaner made money on this dunking — according to reports, more than $1M was bet on the Gatorade color:
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is dunked on by teammates during the second half of the NFL Super Bowl 59 football game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Feb. 9, 2025.
The 43-year-old Sirianni has been the Eagles’ head coach since 2021. Interestingly, his first coaching job was with the defeated Chiefs, and it was in Kansas City where he met his wife, Brett Ashley.
