MILL BASIN — It was a dual, milestone celebration, as Brooklyn’s Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church and the Dimitrios and Georgia Kaloidis Parochial School, commemorated 60 and 45 years of existence, respectively.

The anniversary gala was held at the El Caribe Country Club, the evening of Saturday, Feb. 1 before approximately 250 people.

Maria Vasaka-Monioudis, president of the parish council at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, referred to the institution as “a beacon of hope in the area,” offering religious services and sacraments in both Greek and English.

“The church is really the center of the Greek community,” Vasaka-Monioudis said. “And as our Greek community grew, in 1980, we opened up the Dimitrios and Georgia Kaloidis Parochial School, teaching education, religion and Greek traditions.”
