SUNSET PARK — “RED CARDS” ARE BEING HANDED out to students at Sunset Park Prep middle school to inform students and parents about their rights as non-citizen residents, reports Gothamist, while some families at the school – where 70% of the students are from immigrant families – keep their children home out of worry.

Federal immigration officials are generally prohibited from entering public schools throughout the city. However, teachers are saying there are more absences than normal. Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman said on Jan. 21, “Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest.”

“I’ve had one parent share that her daughter has been home for a week because … a neighbor was deported so they’re afraid to go out,” said Caroll Jimenez, a teacher who works at Sunset Park Prep to Gothamist.
