Two teens arrested for taking R Train on a joyride

BROOKLYN — TWO TEEN BOYS, ages 15 and 17, were arrested Monday for allegedly taking an empty R train on a dangerous joyride through Brooklyn, law enforcement sources confirmed. The incident began around 10:20 p.m. on Jan. 25 at the 36th Street and Fourth Avenue station in Sunset Park. The two teens caught were brought to the NYPD’s 60th Precinct on Coney Island and charged.
Police said that six individuals gained unauthorized entry to the unoccupied R Train, which was in a layup. They damaged glass panels on the train’s cameras, coloring over them with marker, and took the train for a ride. Finally, they exited the train and fled on foot to parts unknown. NYPD footage showed the suspects navigating the train, which reportedly reached speeds of 30 mph on active lines.
The 15-year-old was apprehended Monday at James Madison High School in Midwood, while the older suspect was arrested separately, according to the New York Post. Both face charges of reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and criminal trespass, with the younger boy also charged with possession of burglary tools, according to the NYPD. The 17-year-old has a prior juvenile arrest for robbery from late October 2024, the Post said. “Breaking into and moving subway cars is dangerous, illegal, and will not be tolerated,” NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said in a statement on Monday.
