
Flu cases are still heading up across New York

CITYWIDE — CONFIRMED CASES OF INFLUENZA in New York City and statewide are high and heading higher, according to the NYC and NYS Health Departments. Data for the week ending Jan. 25, which is the latest available, shows flu activity to be widespread, with a 6% increase in positive tests statewide and a 4% increase in NYC. Positive tests in the city are higher than any time in the past five years. Across the state, hospitalizations increased 11% compared to the previous week, and outbreaks in hospitals and nursing homes shot up 15%. Sadly, four children died statewide from influenza during the week, bringing the total to six this season so far, the state Health Department reported. No NYC children died of influenza during the most recent week reported, but one city child died earlier this season.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, influenza activity remains elevated and continues to increase across the country. CDC estimates that there have been at least 20 million illnesses, 250,000 hospitalizations and 11,000 deaths from flu so far this season.
