Attempted jewelry heist at Bay Ridge store fails

BAY RIDGE — LAMAR JEWELRY at 7127 5th Ave. was the target of an attempted burglary Saturday evening, after thieves smashed through three layers of safety glass. Video footage of the incident showed three individuals running up to the store and swinging sledge hammers at the windows, as a mother and child fled out of the way.
“They broke through all three layers but they weren’t able to get in,” said Mark Ayub, son of owner Fawzi Ayub, to News12 Brooklyn. “If they had, they could have gotten all $200,000 in our merchandise.”
According to the New York Police Department, the suspects fled empty-handed. The safety glass, installed just a week prior, prevented them from accessing the store’s inventory. Despite no items being stolen, the damage is estimated at $15,000.
The incident mirrors a similar attempted break-in nearby in December 2024, raising concerns about repeated targeting. “It just feels like the area is vulnerable,” Ayub said.
