James and A.G. coalition win temp halt of Trump’s freeze on federal funds

NATIONWIDE — A JUDGE GRANTED a motion on Friday filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James and 22 other attorneys general to halt the implementation of a new Trump administration policy that would block federal agency grants, loans, and other financial assistance programs. The U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island granted the coalition’s request for a temporary restraining order which extends beyond the Jan. 28 administrative stay granted by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in response to a lawsuit brought by nonprofit groups that receive federal funds. The court order states that a president cannot unilaterally halt congressional spending commitments.
“This administration’s reckless plan to block federal funding has already caused chaos, confusion, and conflict throughout our country,” James said in a release. “In the short time since this policy was announced, families have been cut off from childcare services, essential Medicaid funds were disrupted, and critical law enforcement efforts were put in jeopardy.” James said she would continue to fight against the illegal cuts to essential services.
