STATEWIDE – GOVERNOR HOCHUL ON Sunday spoke out against President Trump’s plan to levy heavy tariffs against several of the nation’s largest trading partners, including 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada (with the exception of fuels from Canada, which will have 10% tariffs) and an additional 10% tariff on China.

“In New York and across the Northeast, gas and electricity costs could skyrocket. Tariffs on Canadian lumber and building materials would drive up housing costs and stall construction. These tariffs will disrupt supply chains, slow production, and cost jobs. And when other countries hit back, our small businesses, farmers and manufacturers will take the hit,” Hochul wrote in a press statement. “Republican members of New York’s congressional delegation have a choice: stand up for their constituents or let the Administration push through this disastrous policy. I urge New Yorkers to call them with a clear message — no backdoor tax.”

Canada is a major trading partner of New York, with the state importing nearly $23 billion in goods over the northern border in 2022 that could be subject to the tariffs. Additionally, Canada announced that it will retaliate with its own 25% tariffs aimed at U.S. exports, targeting a wide variety of products from the U.S., some of which will likely affect the $19.5 billion in goods that New York exports to Canada each year. New York also imports $2.7 billion in goods from Mexico yearly, as of 2021.

Canada’s Department of Finance stated that its tariffs will remain in place until America’s are lifted.
