NEW YORK — Like big ice skates with sails: A drone view shows antique wooden ice sailing yachts, built during the late 1800s, maintained and sailed by members of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club, as they prepare to sail on the frozen Hudson River near Athens, Jan. 25, 2025. Sailing on the ice has been a winter recreational tradition in the Hudson Valley since the 1800s. However, before and during the Revolutionary War, the homesteading Dutch had a very practical purpose for ice sailing: to transport people and farm animals, such as sheep.

During the American Revolution, Robert Livingston (of an old New York family) was said to have tried utilizing an incendiary-loaded ice boat to explode a British warship that was frozen in Lake Champlain.

The exhibit is open at the Center for Jewish History in Manhattan, marking the first time the secret annex — a central part of the Anne Frank House museum — has been completely recreated outside of Amsterdam.

The New York reconstruction shows the five rooms of the secret annex as they would have been furnished while the Frank family and others lived there in hiding. The exhibit, which focuses on Anne as a young, aspiring writer, includes a reconstruction of the writing desk where she wrote her diary.

MANHATTAN — ‘While I’m here, maybe Trump will lend me his hairdresser’: Steve Bannon, former advisor of U.S. President Donald Trump, exits the courtroom after attending a pre-trial conference hearing in his fraud case stemming from a fundraising effort to build a border wall, at the New York Criminal Court, Jan. 22, 2025. Judge April Newbauer, an acting Justice for the New York State Supreme Court, 1st District, moved the trial date a week later from Feb. 25 to March 4, after Bannon hired a law firm with prominent Brooklyn attorney Arthur Aidala to represent him.

Aidala, who is also representing Harvey Weinstein in a well-publicized rape trial, had told Judge Newbauer he originally declined Bannon’s request, then later said he’d do so when his scheduled freed. At one point, Aidala was also on President Trump’s pre-inaugural list of possible candidates for the U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn.

INDONESIA — ‘Celebrate if you will, I’m looking for a home …’: A stray cat is reflected in a glass window as red lanterns hung on trees to celebrate the Lunar New Year in Jakarta, West Java, Jan. 28, 2025. Indonesians call the New Year Tahun Baru Imlek, and it is a time of family gatherings and cultural performances.

While Indonesia and China both observe the Year of the Snake in 2025, other Asian nations’ zodiacs differ. The cat, for example, replaces the rabbit in Vietnam, and the buffalo replaces the ox.
